Computers may replace a lot of human jobs, but we think they are not yet completely ready to write songs for the holidays. A research scientist trained her neural network on 240 different Christmas songs to see what the artificial intelligence system could learn about the song Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. She asked what comes after the line “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and answered it with various interpretations, including one that started like this:

Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, with his red belly
The Most Holy King of the whole earth,
Had a baby at Christmas, on Christmas day,
A true and holy God went to earth
With human flesh for the sacrifice …

Research scientist Janelle Shane also asked her neural network to produce an original carol. The AI seemed to focus on the commercialism of the vacation, and wrote a song about buying a yacht “now”.

“I can't tell if she has misunderstood what Christmas songs are about, or if she has understood some too well,” she wrote in a blog post about her experiment on Tuesday.
